Council approves June as Vitiligo Awareness Month in Proclamation
Sumter County Council Tuesday evening approved a Proclamation declaring June as Vitiligo Awareness Month.
Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disorder that causes patches of skin to lose pigment or color.
Tiffany Williams, the Stormwater Department Office Manager, thanked members of Council for helping bring awareness to Vitiligo.
She was diagnosed as having Vitiligo several years ago and started the first ever Vitiligo Support Group in Sumter in 2012.
In January 2023, Williams and several members of the group donated six Vitiligo-focused children’s books to the Sumter County Library.
On Tuesday she thanked County Council for approving the Proclamation.

Sumter Veteran White leads Pledge of Allegiance at County Council meeting
Sumter Veteran Matthew White Tuesday evening led the Pledge of Allegiance before County Council’s regular meeting.
White served our Nation in the U.S Marine Corps from October 2008 to March 2011. He is the Junior Vice Commandant in the Sumter Marine Corps League #1202.
He lives in District 5, which is represented by Councilwoman Vivian Fleming-McGhaney.

County Council's May 9, 2023, meeting
Sumter County Council on May 9 approved the initial steps in forming a budget for the upcoming Fiscal Year during its regular meeting.
Sumter County Administrator Gary Mixon spoke about an ordinance, in title only, authorizing the issuance and sale of $3.5 million in general obligation bonds to fund capital purchases for the upcoming budget cycle.
First reading was approved.
Mixon then spoke about the budget ordinance, in title only. Projected revenues are currently $58,718,334, he said, with projected expenses at $59,982,350, for a current deficit of $1,264,016.
First reading was approved. Councilman Eugene Baten voted against it.
Sumter County Attorney Johnathan Bryan then spoke about an ordinance to approve a storm water drainage easement on property adjacent to Brewington Road.
First reading was approved.
Councilman Carlton Washington said he had just left a tour of F.J. Delaine Elementary School and apologized for being tardy. Washington advocated for the school.
Mixon reported Sumter County Government is in the process of submitting work to the South Carolina Association of Counties to be considered for the J. Mitchell Graham Memorial Award. Sumter County’s efforts toward fighting litter could be considered as a model for other counties with similar issues, Mixon said. A formal presentation will be held on May 24 in Columbia.
