Ernest “Chip” Finney is the first born son of hard working teachers who knew the value of education.  His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Finney, Jr, worked to instill a thirst for knowledge in their three children.

Finney graduated from Sumter High School in 1973.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wofford College in 1977 and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1980.

Finney returned home to practice law in the firm founded by his father, who in 1990 was elected to the position of Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court.

Finney earned a reputation as a successful trial attorney, and practitioner of the law. He represented both individuals and corporations in the state and federal courts throughout South Carolina.

Finney’s career has always included public service. He served as a member of the Public Defender Corporation, was elected President of the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, President of the South Carolina Black Lawyers Association, and President of the Goodfellows Club of Sumter.

In 2004 Finney was selected to serve as a Municipal Court Judge for the City of Columbia, a position he held until 2010.

Finney was elected in November 2010 to serve as the Solicitor for the Third Judicial Circuit.  This district includes Clarendon, Lee, Sumter and Williamsburg Counties.

Finney and his wife Tammy have been blessed and challenged with the nurturing and support of four children.
